Connecting people to housing in times of crisis

Across Southeast Asia, Airbnb.org partners with local organisations to help those in need access free temporary housing
In times of crisis, Airbnb.org works with governments and nonprofit partners across the region to help provide free temporary housing for people affected by disaster and displacement, first responders and for patients and their families who need a place to stay while travelling for medical treatment.

Philippines earthquakes and typhoons 2025

On 30 September 2025, just before 10:00 PM, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck northern Cebu. Seventy-nine people lost their lives. More than 128,000 families were affected, over 18,000 homes were damaged, and at least 3,500 were destroyed. Airbnb.org partnered with Angat Buhay to provide free emergency housing for their response team members who worked tirelessly to support relief efforts across four activations: the Cebu earthquake, the Davao earthquake, Typhoon Kalmaegi, and Typhoon Fung-wong.

“Before in our relief operations, we had to sleep on the floor for seven days straight, so having an Airbnb where I can sleep and rest comfortably is really helpful. It helps in energising us so that we can better serve the communities in need.”

Free temporary stays for patients and caregivers

Free temporary stays for patients and caregivers

In Thailand, many patients and their families, especially from rural areas, must travel long distances to reach quality hospitals concentrated in Bangkok and other major cities. This journey imposes a heavy financial and logistical burden on patients and their caregivers. For that reason, Airbnb.org, in partnership with local partners, facilitates free accommodation for children seeking medical treatment and their caretakers, ensuring they have a comfortable place to stay to rest and recover during their most vulnerable times.

In the aftermath of the devastating gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights in 2025—which displaced more than 500 people, injured 150, and destroyed 81 homes—Airbnb.org provided emergency housing support to help residents impacted by the accident.Working closely with the Selangor state government, Airbnb.org provided nearly 2,700 nights of free temporary housing to families forced from their homes. The initiative moved displaced residents into comfortable, stable housing, easing pressure on public facilities while supporting recovery efforts.
